The good, the bad, and the ugly...

Ok so we've received some good news and some bad news today.

The good news:
Her blood test results all came back negative so it looks like she's infection free! They also thought she had a case of pneumonia because of the fluid that got into her lungs, but after looking over another x-ray done yesterday it looks like a lot of the problems cleared up within 24 hours. So no pneumonia either! They are going to stop giving her antibiotics now so the IV can come out too.

So that's all great to hear, but she still isn't quite herself again yet. She hasn't been waking up as often as she was before. She has a lot more secretions so they are having to suction her more frequently. Also, she has needed higher oxygen than she did before trying to extubate her. Hopefully all these small issues will resolve themselves in the next couple days.

As of right now the plan is to try to extubate either Thursday or Friday of this week. I'm scared.... and here's why -

The bad news:
At her failed extubation attempt this past week the doctor said he thought the problem may be reflux. Eden has been receiving medication for it to help the acidic level decrease and reduce the irritation in her throat. As past blog posts can attest, we were really hoping reflux was the issue and a little antacid would do the trick!

I'm not sure if it was portrayed this way, or if it we just took the info as we wanted to hear it, but we were under the impression that the reflux was a pretty big issue that could quite possibly be the exact reason she wasn't doing well off the ventilator. However, the doctor we talked to today (which is one of the other neonatologists) said the chances of reflux being the issue is not very likely. Right now it's looking like there is a much more serious problem with her airway.

So we will continue to pray hard... maybe we will see a miracle and everything will work out perfectly this time.

In other news, she weighed in at 4 lb 8.4 oz last night. At least she's not having any problems gaining weight!

So now I'll end the post with the fun stuff - pictures!

Don't be fooled - those aren't socks that she's wearing - it's gauze bandaids from all the poking! Poor thing...

I hope things go good for you guys! We're pullin' for you! I remember Alina's little feet, they looked like a pin cushions. I bet Eden's is really pricked up too! We'll keep you in our prayers!
